I can’t believe Judy Garland did gookie face!
Great stuff, John, thank you for your posts.
You know, when my kids were little, along with cartoons etc, we showed them many Marx Brothers films. One day I put on something new: Top Hat, the Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers classic. Sabatino was about four at the time. He sat on the floor in silence and watched the opening scene intently for fifteen minutes or so. Finally he wailed, “WHERE’S HARPO???"
And why not? Like many films of that black & white era, Top Hat opens with rich people making small talk. Surely any second now Harpo could burst in and get things rolling? I began to imagine various classic films from Sabatino's perspective, an alternate reality where at any moment, no matter the director, writer, or Hollywood studio, here comes Harpo.
